A bit of behind-the-scenes from my field recordings. A daytime forest ambience recorded in March 2025.
The signal chain includes a matched pair of Schoeps CMC6 MK2h omni microphones, recorded simultaneously to multiple recorders: Sound Devices 552 (internal recorder), Zoom F8n Pro, Korg MR-1000 (DSD), and Sound Devices MixPre-6. The main purpose of this experiment is to determine whether there's an audible difference between PCM WAV (24-bit, 96 kHz / 32-bit, 96 kHz with Zoom F8) and DSD (1-bit, 5.6 MHz) recording formats, while also comparing AD converters, preamp performance, and sound coloration across these devices. Additionally, capturing to multiple recorders simultaneously from the same analog source allows me to precisely assess subtle nuances in sound reproduction. All devices received the same signal via Sound Devices 552, which was chosen for its extensive routing capabilities, making this multi-recorder setup possible. The power for all devices was supplied through a Deity power distributor and Deity Smart Battery, ensuring consistent and clean power delivery across the entire setup. The sound in this video comes from the Korg MR-1000, recorded in DSD 1-bit 5.6 MHz, then converted to 24-bit 96 kHz and imported into DaVinci Resolve.
